Reading & Writing Goals for 2022!

In 2021, I read close to 70 books, wrote two new novel-length stories, queried twice, applied (and got into) grad school for my MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults, and uhh I think that's it?

For 2022, I've got pretty ambitious goals. I have hopes and dreams that are out of my control (I'd love to get an agent, for example), but this post is going to be about the things within my grasp. I cannot force an agent to fall in love with my book, much as I'd like to, but I can revise a book and write a new one! Behold, my reading & writing goals for 2022.

In 2022, I think my numerical book goal will be 75. It's a stretch, but based on my reading this year, and the fact that I'll be in an educational program that will require me to read a lot, I think I can do it! This past year really got me excited about books in a way I hadn't been when I was working overnights.

As for the type of books I want to read, I will of course read a ton of kidlit, but I'm hoping to expand from simply reading YA to also taking in some middle grade, chapter books, and picture books. There is so much great variety in kidlit, and I really want to enjoy it all — and, importantly, learn from it all. But I also want to age up, continuing to read adult literary fiction and nonfiction. I'm not too into science fiction and adult epic fantasy (mostly because I don't have the heart to dive into a series of like seven 1,000 page books), but I've been reading adult romance and some litfic this year, and really enjoying it!

I want to make sure I continue to read diversely. This year, more than 50 percent of my reads were from non-white authors, and I want to increase that percentage in 2022. I want to read internationally as well, from authors who are not US-centric, and I want to read in Italian. At least one-two books next year. It'll be a great way to keep up with my knowledge of the language!

Diversity is about more than just race, ethnicity, and cultural background, of course, so I want to continue reading queer books, books featuring disabled characters, and I especially want to seek out books about mental illness or that feature good mental health rep.

So there you have it: I want to read, a lot, and widely, in 2022.

When it comes to writing, I have big goals across many different forms of writing.

I want to write, revise, and query in 2022! I am planning on drafting a new project during my first 1-2 semesters at VCFA with the guidance of my advisors, but I also have two books I wrote in 2021 that I need to revise. One of them is pretty close to being query-ready, and is in fact on the computers of some beta readers who are giving me excellent feedback about where to improve the book and make it truly sing. The other one need of some hefty work, let's just put it that way.

I think the book that I wrote this summer, a sapphic love story feat. best friends to lovers, a grandparental mystery plot, and on-the-page therapy and medication rep, is pretty close to being query-ready and I have high hopes for it. I really, really love the story (which I affectionately called Claudia's Tale for so long that even though that is no longer its title, it's what I'm going to call it here), and I can't wait to take another pass at it and really fix it up.

In 2022 I want to continue publishing essays, articles, and author interviews online. I want to keep working with We Need Diverse Books and LitReactor, but I also have a goal/dream of hitting a new publication quarterly. I have some dream publications, of course, and I'm not going to list them cause I'm feeling superstitious. But do wish me luck!

Blogs & Newsletters

I want to grow my blog and Medium! I want to publish at least once a week on each platform, though I might start publishing more on here if the year goes well. We'll have to see!

I'm also planning on sending out my newsletters more regularly and on ensuring they're filled with fun updates, great pictures, and helpful tips. If you're not already signed up for my newsletter, sign up here and get excited for tomorrow's iteration!

My goal with blogs & newsletters in 2022 is to really provide value. I don't want to just chatter about myself (though of course I'll do that some) — I want to hype up great books and get them into the hands of new readers, share what I'm learning, and help elucidate the writing & querying and, maybe someday, publishing process as well. I want to figure out a way to set it up so that if you follow me on social, read my blogs, receive my newsletter, you're getting something great as a result.

It's been a struggle to figure out just what it is I have to offer, but...I think I'm getting there!

The End

I hope your end-of-year celebrations are merry and fun and that 2022 brings us respite & joy and, for me, growth. Much love to all, and do feel free to share with me your reading, writing, or life goals for 2022!
